An Analysis of the Relationship between Housing Poverty and Problematic Drinking Using Panel Data
Lee Suk-Hyun

Abstract
Housing is largely associated with human life. Moreover, its meaning is not only confined to being a physical space; it also encompasses aspects of human life such as marital life, safety, social security, and health. From an economic perspective, individuals with problematic drinking behaviors are more prone to extreme financial conditions such as income poverty or housing poverty. Therefore, this study acknowledged the importance of the effects that the housing poverty might have on problematic drinking behaviors and provided a research hypothesis on the basis of the theoretical background. For the analysis, the study used the Korea Welfare Panel Study data of 4-13 Waves (2009-2018). The study sample was a total of 77,740 individuals, and the missing values were substituted by employing EM regression and multiple imputation. Housing poverty was considered as the binary variable and was determined on the basis of minimum housing standard established by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. In addition, problematic drinking was considered as the continuous variable, and its data were measured using the Audit Index. The study statistically verified the research hypothesis using a fixed effect panel analysis, and its results revealed that those belonging to the housing poverty group were more likely to be engaged in problematic drinking behaviors. On the basis of these results, the study suggested that diverse practical programs and a comprehensive support policy should be formulated for the housing poverty groups.
